What to do with the days you actually have in the parks.
Crater Lake, OR
The Only Trail Down to Crater Lake Is Shut Until 2029
Cleetwood Cove (the single legal route to the shore of Crater Lake, and the dock every boat leaves from) closed for rehabilitation through the 2026, 2027, and 2028 seasons. That removes the thing most visitors drive here to do, and it makes the rim hikes, which were always better, the entire trip.
Yosemite Valley, CA
Three Days in Yosemite: The High Country Nobody Budgets Time For
Yosemite Valley is seven square miles holding most of the park's visitors. The park is 1,200 square miles. Give it three days and the correct move is to spend only one of them in the Valley, because Tioga Road climbs to 9,945 feet and delivers you into a completely different park with a fraction of the people.

One Day Among the Giants: Sequoia Without the Generals Highway Gridlock
The largest tree on Earth by volume stands at the end of a short paved path that most visitors reach after ninety minutes of switchbacks and a fight for parking. There is a free shuttle running every fifteen minutes that solves the entire problem, and hardly anybody uses it.

One Day in the North Cascades, America's Least-Visited Famous Park
Three hours from Seattle sits a national park with more glaciers than anywhere in the lower 48 outside Alaska, and it receives a tiny fraction of the visitors that Rainier or Olympic do. The reason is simple and it is not obscurity: the only road through it closes for five months a year, and the park itself has almost no roads at all.

Everyone goes to Paradise, and Paradise deserves it: wildflower meadows under 14,411 feet of glaciated volcano. But it is also the busiest place in the park, and for 2026 the timed-entry system that used to ration it is gone. Which means the whole game is now what time you arrive.

A Day in Glacier: Highline, Avalanche Lake, or Logan Pass. Pick One
About fifty miles of road across the Continental Divide, a hiking season that barely covers July to September, and 2026 brings a real change: no vehicle reservations anywhere in the park. That removes the planning headache and leaves the harder problem, which was always parking at Logan Pass.

Three Days in the Smokies: LeConte, the Balds, and the Waterfalls Worth the Crowds
Three days is enough to stop treating this park as a scenic drive with hikes attached. It is enough for the eleven-mile climb everyone talks about, a day on the crest at 6,000 feet, and a morning of waterfalls, and enough to work out that the two states are two different parks.

An eleven-mile one-way loop road that takes thirty minutes empty and four hours full is where most first visits to America's busiest national park go to die. With one day and 12 million people a year to share it with, the answer is to get out of the car early and walk.

Yosemite Valley is seven square miles holding most of the park's visitors, and a single day there can very easily become six hours of driving between parking lots you cannot get into. The fix is not seeing more. It is picking one climb, getting on it before eight, and leaving the car alone.
