Trolling With Lead Core: The Line Is the Weight

Lead core puts the sinking power in the line itself, so there is nothing in the water but lure. How colors work as a depth unit, why five feet a color is only a start, and what the method is genuinely bad at.

Lead core is the only trolling method where the line itself is the depth control. No ball, no diver, no weight on a snap. The line sinks, and how much of it you let out is how deep you fish.

That sounds primitive next to a downrigger with a digital counter. In practice it catches fish on days when the hardware does not, and the reason is that there is nothing down there except your lure.

What the line actually is

Lead core is a soft lead wire inside a woven sheath, usually nylon or dacron. The lead gives it weight. The sheath gives it strength and gives it something a knot can hold onto, because you cannot meaningfully knot bare lead wire.

The important part is the marking. Lead core is dyed in ten segments, each a different color, each ten yards long. Ten colors makes a hundred yards. Because each color is a known length, you have a measuring device built into the line: you count colors as they leave the reel and you know exactly how much is out without a counter and without guessing.

That is where the vocabulary comes from. Nobody says "ninety feet of lead core out." They say "three colors back," and everybody knows what that means.

How To Troll With Lead Core

How deep is a color

You will hear five feet per color, and you should treat that the way you treat any rule of thumb: as the middle of a range, correct in the conditions it was coined in and wrong at the edges.

The things that move it are the same things that move every trolling depth. Speed is the big one, and it moves it hard. Lead core at one and a half miles an hour is running meaningfully deeper per color than the same line at two and a half, because the line is planing as well as sinking. A lure with a lot of drag, a big flasher or a deep-diving plug, holds the line up. A small spoon lets it fall. Heavier lead core, sold by test weight, sinks faster than light lead core.

So the honest version is this: five feet a color is where you start, and then you find out. If you are ticking bottom in thirty feet of water on five colors, you are running deeper than the rule. If you are marking fish at twenty-five and getting nothing on six colors, you may be over them.

The two reliable ways to find out are the same as everywhere else. Let out until you touch bottom in a known depth, note the count, and now you have a real data point for today's speed and today's lure. Or watch what your line does behind an inline board, because a rig that is running deeper than you think pulls the board differently than one running shallow.

Full core, segmented core, and why almost nobody runs ten colors

A full hundred-yard core is a lot of line. It takes an enormous reel, it is heavy to fish, and it is slow to deploy and slow to recover. It also locks you into one depth range for as long as it is on the reel.

Most people run segments instead. A segmented setup, sometimes called a shorty, splices a short piece of lead core, two to five colors, between a long spool of backing and a monofilament leader. Backing takes up the reel capacity cheaply, the lead core does the sinking, and the leader keeps the visible business end away from the heavy line.

The advantage is that a spread of segmented rods, one at two colors, one at three, one at five, covers a band of the water column at once, and each rod is light enough to fish comfortably. The advantage over a downrigger is that when you find the depth you do not have to change anything on that rod, because it is already there.

The joins are the weak point of the whole system, and there are two of them. The usual answers are a loop-to-loop connection or a knot in which the lead wire is stripped back out of the sheath so the sheath alone is joined. Whatever you use, test it before you trust it to a fish, because a splice that pulls is a splice that costs you the entire lead core section as well as the fish.

Rigging Leader for Lead Core Line

The leader is not optional

Between the lead core and the lure goes a monofilament or fluorocarbon leader, and it is usually long. Twenty feet is common. Fifty is not unusual.

Three reasons. The line is thick, opaque and colored, and a fish looking at your spoon should not also be looking at that. The leader gives the lure room to move on something with a little stretch in it, which cushions a strike on a system that otherwise has almost no give. And the leader is the piece that gets damaged, so making it the sacrificial part means you replace fifteen feet of cheap mono rather than resplicing lead core on the water.

The cost is at the boat, and it is the same problem divers have. A fifty-foot leader means the fish is fifty feet away when the splice reaches the rod tip. Plan the netting before you need it.

What it is good at

Quietness, mostly. There is no ball, no diver, no wire humming. On heavily fished water, and especially on clear water in bright conditions, that is a real difference and the people who fish lead core hardest tend to be the ones who fish the most pressured lakes.

It also runs beautifully behind planer boards. Lead core plus an inline board puts a quiet lure at a controlled depth well off to the side of the boat, which is about as undisturbed a presentation as a trolling boat can manage.

Walleye trolling in late summer is where a lot of people first meet it, running crankbaits or harnesses over basins. Brown trout and rainbow trout in the top thirty feet of a lake are close to a perfect lead core fishery, because that band is exactly where boat noise costs you fish. Kokanee salmon get trolled on light lead core setups in western reservoirs. Muskellunge trollers use it to get large baits down without a lot of hardware, and lake trout are usually deeper than lead core alone wants to go, which is why the same boats carry riggers.

What it is bad at

Changing depth. This is the honest weakness and it is a big one.

With a downrigger you turn a crank and you are ten feet deeper in fifteen seconds. With lead core you reel in a hundred and fifty feet of heavy line and a fifty-foot leader, change nothing except how much you let back out, and do it again. If you are searching, that is painful. Lead core rewards a boat that already knows the depth and wants to fish it quietly, not a boat that is hunting.

It is also physically heavy to fish, it fills reels, it kinks if you mishandle it, and a fish arrives at the boat having dragged all of it, so the fight is muffled. Nobody has ever described playing a trout on lead core as delicate.

Copper, the deeper cousin

If you find yourself wanting more depth than lead core gives you and you still do not want hardware in the water, the answer people reach for is copper.

Solid copper wire line is denser than lead core and sinks considerably faster for the same length out, which is why Great Lakes salmon boats run it in lengths of two, three and four hundred feet to reach depths lead core cannot. It is fished the same way, usually behind a board or straight out the back, and it buys depth for exactly the same currency: it is heavier, it is slower to deploy and retrieve, and it is less pleasant to fight a fish on.

Copper is also less forgiving of mishandling than lead core. A kink in copper is a permanent weak point rather than an annoyance, and the line work-hardens with use, so a spool that has been fished hard for several seasons is not the spool you bought.

The reason to know it exists is that it clarifies what lead core is for. Lead core is the quiet, moderate-depth tool, roughly the top thirty or forty feet. Copper is the quiet deep tool. Beyond that you are into riggers and divers whether you like them or not.

Handling it without ruining it

Lead core is soft, and soft is the whole problem.

A sharp bend puts a permanent kink in the wire inside the sheath. Once kinked, the wire can break while the sheath stays intact, which is the worst failure mode this line has, because the line looks fine and simply stops sinking properly. If you feel a section go limp and stringy compared to the rest, that is what happened.

The related failure is sheath slip. The wire can migrate inside the sheath under repeated load, bunching in one place and leaving a hollow section elsewhere. Both problems concentrate near the splices, which is where the line is worked hardest.

Practical handling: do not let the line go slack and pile on the reel under load, because that is where kinks are born. Pay it out under light tension rather than dumping it. When you strip a section to make a splice, work the wire out gently rather than pulling it. And when a rod has had a long season, check the last few feet before each splice by feel, running it between your fingers for soft spots. Replacing a segment is cheap. Losing a fish to a section that quietly stopped being lead core is not.

The gear

Big reels, mostly. That is the shape of the shopping list.

A line counter reel with real capacity is the core purchase, because you are storing backing plus lead core plus leader and you want line-counter numbers for the backing portion. A long soft rod, eight to nine feet with a moderate action, does the same job it does on a downrigger: it absorbs the shock that a nearly stretchless system otherwise passes straight to the hooks.

Beyond that:

Lead core in more than one test weight, because sink rate is a variable you can buy rather than fight.

Backing, and plenty of it. Braid is the usual choice, thin so it does not eat capacity.

Leader material in twenty to fifty foot lengths, plus the means to make a clean splice. Practice the splice at home. It is not a knot you want to learn for the first time in a chop.

Inline planer boards, because lead core and boards belong together and half the value of the method is getting the lure away from the boat as well as down.

A rod holder that can be set and forgotten. Lead core is set-and-troll fishing, and the rod is in the holder for hours.

The lead question, which is worth reading carefully

A number of states restrict lead fishing tackle, generally to protect loons and other waterbirds that swallow lost sinkers. The northeastern states have been the most active on this and the rules are not identical from one to the next.

Those restrictions are typically written around sinkers and jigs, and usually bounded by a weight or a dimension. Lead core line is a different object and is not obviously the thing those rules were aimed at. But the definitions vary, we could not confirm the treatment of lead core line state by state, and "it was probably not aimed at me" is not a defense worth relying on.

Read your own state's actual wording before you fish lead core somewhere that restricts lead tackle. If the definition is ambiguous, ask the agency directly and get the answer from them rather than from a forum. This is a two-minute question with a clear answer at the source, and it is exactly the sort of thing that is cheap to check and expensive to get wrong.

The point

Lead core is the answer to a specific question: how do I get a lure to a moderate depth with nothing else in the water.

If that is not your question, something else is better. A diver covers more water faster and tells you which side the fish were on. A rigger changes depth on a crank. If it is your question, nothing else is close, and that is why a method that looks like a museum piece next to an electric downrigger is still on the back of every serious walleye boat on the water.

The people who fish it well tend to talk about it the same way, too. They do not describe lead core as a way to reach a depth. They describe it as a way to reach a fish that has already refused everything else, which is a different job and one that the quietest tool in the box is going to keep winning.

Recommended gear

  • A high-capacity line counter reel

    You are storing backing plus lead core plus a long leader on one spool, so capacity is the constraint. The counter gives you a number for the backing portion, which is the part the color segments cannot measure for you.

  • A long, soft rod

    Eight to nine feet, moderate action. Lead core has almost no stretch and the leader supplies only some of what is missing, so the rod has to absorb the shock of a strike or the hooks will do it instead.

  • Lead core in more than one test weight

    Sink rate is a variable you can buy. Heavier core gets down faster on fewer colors, lighter core gives a more forgiving presentation in shallow water.

  • Braided backing, and plenty of it

    Thin enough that it does not eat the capacity you need for the lead core itself, and it puts the reel's line counter to work on the portion of the system that has no color marks.

  • Leader material and a splice you have practiced

    Twenty to fifty feet of mono or fluorocarbon per rod, plus loop-to-loop connectors or the knot of your choice. Learn the splice at the kitchen table, because a failed join costs you the lead core section as well as the fish.

  • Inline planer boards

    Lead core and boards belong together. Half the value of a quiet presentation is lost if it is running directly behind the hull, and a board moves it well off to the side.

  • A solid rod holder

    This is set-and-troll fishing. The rod sits in the holder for hours under steady load, and you want the holder to be the last thing you think about.
