A downrigger takes your lure straight down. A diver takes it down and sideways at the same time, and that second direction is the entire reason the tool exists.
Every boat drags a cone of noise and bubbles behind it. The prop wash, the hull, the engine. Some fish do not care. Plenty of fish care a great deal, and the ones that care are sitting out to the side of your track where nothing you tow directly behind you will ever reach them. A diver reaches them.
What a diver is
Strip away the branding and a diver is a disc with a weighted bottom edge and a bend in its face.
You tie your main line to one end and your leader to the other. When you pull it through the water, the pressure on that angled face does the same thing an airplane wing does, only pointed the other way. It drives the diver down. Because the weight sits at the bottom edge and the face is set at an angle to the line of travel, it also drives the diver out, away from the boat, on whichever side you have set it for.
The result is a lure running at depth, well off to the side, in water your boat has not disturbed.
The common side-planing ones you will hear named are the Dipsy Diver, the Slide Diver and the Deeper Diver. They differ in how they trip, how the leader attaches and how much they pull, but they all work on that same principle. The Jet Diver shares the name but not the mechanism: it is a buoyant inline diving planer that runs straight down only, with no lateral action and nothing that trips on a strike.

On the bottom of most divers is a ring you can rotate, marked with numbers. It is the control that makes the tool worth learning.
At the zero setting the weight hangs directly beneath and the diver runs more or less straight down. It is at its deepest here and it is directly behind the boat, which makes it a downrigger substitute rather than a complement.
As you turn the ring to one, two and three, the weight moves progressively around the edge, the face cants further over, and the diver planes harder and harder out to the side. The manufacturers describe this as trading depth for lateral distance and that is exactly what it is. Nothing is added. At the highest setting you have a diver a long way off the beam and considerably shallower than it would be straight down on the same amount of line.
The whole ring assembly also flips, so a given setting can be run to port or to starboard. That is how you get two or four divers out at once without them meeting in the middle.
Where the depth comes from, and why we are not printing a chart
Here is the thing people want and the thing we are not going to invent for you.
The depth a diver reaches is a function of six things at once: which diver it is, which size, what ring setting, how much line you have out, what that line is made of and how fast you are going. Change any one and the answer moves. Thin braid cuts water better than fat monofilament and runs the same diver noticeably deeper on the same line out. A bigger diver goes deeper and pulls harder. Speed up and everything gets shallower.
Every diver manufacturer publishes a dive curve for its own product on specified line at a specified speed. That curve is the number you want, and it is the only one that means anything for your setup. Use it, or use a trolling app that has those curves loaded, and then correct it against what you actually observe.
What is worth internalizing instead of a table is the relationship. More line out is deeper. Thinner line is deeper. Slower is deeper. Lower ring number is deeper. Once you know which direction each dial moves you can hunt a depth in three adjustments instead of guessing.
The trip
This is the part of the design that makes a diver fishable rather than merely functional.
A diver under way is pulling hard. It is a plate held at an angle in moving water and it does not want to come back. If it stayed in that state during a fight, reeling a fish in would mean reeling the fish and a permanently deployed brake, and small fish would simply never be felt.
So it trips. There is an arm held under adjustable tension, and when a fish hits hard enough the arm releases, the weighted edge swings around, and the diver flattens out and stops diving. It still has drag. It is still a lump of plastic on your line. But it goes from fighting you to merely being carried.
Setting that trip tension is the same judgment as setting a downrigger release. Too tight and small fish and light bites never fire it, and you find out about them when you retrieve. Too loose and the diver trips on waves, on turns, on weeds and on the lure itself, and you spend the day resetting. Start in the middle, then move it based on what the day is doing.

Between the diver and the lure is a leader, and how long you make it is a real decision.
Short leaders, four to six feet, keep the lure tight behind the diver where it stays in the same water and follows the same turns. They are easy to handle. When the fish comes to the boat, the diver arrives first and the fish is a manageable distance behind it.
Long leaders, ten feet and beyond, put the lure well clear of a large piece of hardware that fish in clear water may not enjoy looking at. They also create an obvious problem: once the diver reaches the rod tip, you cannot reel any further, and the fish is still ten feet away with nothing to do about it except net it at arm's length or hand line the leader.
The Slide Diver exists mostly to solve this. Your line runs through it rather than terminating at it, so the diver can be positioned up the line and, when the fish is played out, it is not a fixed stop between you and the fish. If you want long leaders, that is the design that lets you have them.
What goes on the back
A diver will pull almost anything, and what you hang off it is a separate decision from how you get it down there.
A flasher or dodger with a fly behind it is the standard salmon rig. The flasher rotates or kicks side to side, throws light, and drags the fly through an erratic path it could never swim on its own. It also pulls hard, which is worth knowing before you add one to a diver that is already loading your rod, and it is the combination most likely to overwhelm a marginal rod holder.
A spoon behind a diver is the simplest thing that works and the easiest to get right. Spoons have their own action at a wide range of speeds, they are forgiving of the speed changes a turn introduces, and they tell you quickly whether something is fouled, because a spoon with a leaf on it goes dead in a way you can feel through the rod.
A worm harness, which is a spinner blade ahead of a couple of hooks and a nightcrawler, is the walleye answer and it is speed sensitive in a way the others are not. The blade needs enough water flow to turn and not so much that the bait spins.
Whatever you choose, put the same thing on both sides before you start changing them independently. A spread where every rod is different feels like it is covering the options, but when one fires you have learned nothing you can copy.
Running more than one per side
The reason people learn divers is that you can stack water horizontally in a way downriggers cannot.
Two per side is the normal maximum for most boats, and they are usually called the inside and the outside. The outside diver runs a higher ring number and more line, so it sits further out and further back. The inside runs a lower number and less line, closer and deeper. Set correctly, the two never occupy the same water.
Set incorrectly, they occupy exactly the same water and you will spend twenty minutes cutting a knot out of eighty feet of braid while the boat drifts. The discipline is to change both the setting and the line out between the two, never just one, and to turn the boat gently. A hard turn collapses the geometry of the whole spread and the inside gear goes slack while the outside gear speeds up.
Divers also mix well with the vertical gear. A common Great Lakes spread is riggers down the middle, divers out either side and boards further out still, which is a lot of water covered by one boat. If you have not run a downrigger yet, it is the easier of the two to learn first, because a rigger tells you your depth and a diver makes you deduce it.
What gets caught on them
Divers are a Great Lakes signature but they are not only that.
Walleye on Lake Erie are the fishery a lot of people associate divers with, run with worm harnesses or spoons well off to the side of a boat that has just spooked every fish under it. Steelhead suspended offshore are a classic diver target for the same reason: they sit high and wide and will not tolerate a hull over them.
Chinook salmon and coho salmon take diver-run flashers and flies all season. Lake trout are usually deeper than a diver wants to go, which is precisely the division of labor that makes a mixed spread sensible.
The gear
A diver rod is not a downrigger rod and substituting one for the other is the most common beginner mistake. A downrigger rod is long and soft so it can hold a bow. A diver rod is stiff, because it spends the entire day resisting a device engineered to pull.
Here is the short list.
A stiff diver rod, eight to ten feet, is the foundation. Length gets the gear away from the hull and out around the corner of the boat, stiffness stops the rod from being a permanent parabola.
A line counter reel is not optional here in the way it merely helps elsewhere. Line out is one of the two dials that set your depth. If you do not know it as a number, you cannot repeat what worked and you cannot keep your inside and outside divers apart.
Divers themselves, in more than one size, because size is a depth control. Small ones for shallow work and light rods, magnums for getting down in a hurry.
Braided main line, because it is thinner for its strength, dives deeper on less line, and does not stretch, which matters when you are trying to trip a mechanism a hundred and fifty feet away.
A supply of leader material and swivels. Leaders get chewed, twisted and shortened, and the length is something you will change during the day.
Rod holders that can actually take the load. This is a serious point. A diver puts steady heavy pull on a rod for hours, and a holder that was fine for a bobber rod will bend, break or leave with your outfit.
And a net with a long handle, because the thing about a diver is that the fish arrives with a piece of hardware attached to the line above it, and the geometry at the boat is never as convenient as it was in your head.
Rules, briefly
Divers are ordinary legal terminal tackle, but the count is not. How many rods one angler may fish is set by each state, sometimes varies by water body or season, and a diver rod counts like any other rod. If you are running two divers a side plus riggers, you can arrive at a rod count that is legal on one side of a lake and not the other. Border water is where this bites people.

Why bother
Divers are fiddly. They tangle, they pull, they trip when you do not want them to and refuse to when you do, and they turn a clean fight into a wrestling match with a saucer attached.
What you get for that is water. A boat running four divers and two riggers is presenting six lures across maybe a hundred and twenty feet of width and four different depths, all at once, all measurable, all repeatable. When one of them goes off you know which side, which setting and how much line, and you can put a second rod in the same place inside a minute.
That is the trade. Divers cost you elegance and buy you coverage, and on a big open lake with fish scattered through a lot of empty water, coverage is what finds them.
