eBird is the most useful thing that has ever happened to trip planning for birders. Hundreds of millions of observations, submitted by hundreds of thousands of people, aggregated into a map you can interrogate before you leave the house.
It is also routinely misread, in ways that send people to the wrong places at the wrong times, and in one important respect it deliberately does not tell you the whole truth.
A hotspot is a place people submit lists, not a place birds are
This is the foundational thing. An eBird hotspot is a shared location marker that anyone can submit a checklist to, and its species total is the union of everything anybody has ever reported there. That number is therefore driven by two variables: how good the site is, and how many people have birded it. The second dominates far more often than anyone assumes.
A parking lot at the entrance to a famous reserve routinely carries a higher species total than the marsh itself, because everybody's list starts there. A site near a large city will out-total a better site two hours further out, permanently. A site with an easy pull-in beats a site requiring a mile of walking, regardless of what lives at either. And a site birded by one very good observer for thirty years can look extraordinary while being ordinary.
The honest reading of a high species count is that this place is good, or well watched, or both, and the number alone cannot tell you which.

Most people look at the species list. The bar charts are the useful part.
For a given site, region or county, eBird shows each species as a horizontal bar across the year in weekly bands, with thickness proportional to frequency, meaning the proportion of checklists in that week that reported it. That answers the question you actually have, which is not whether something has ever been seen here but whether it is likely to be here in the week you are going.
Reading them well takes a few habits. Frequency is not abundance, so a thick bar means many checklists included the species rather than that there are many birds, and a single reliable individual can produce a thick bar on its own. Watch the sample size, because a bar chart built on eleven checklists in February is noise, and eBird shows you the underlying numbers if you look. Pay attention to the shoulders, since the weeks where a bar starts and stops are the migration timing and that is the single most valuable thing on the chart. And compare the county chart to the site chart, because a species that is frequent county-wide and absent at your site is telling you something about the site.
What eBird deliberately hides
Many users do not know this. eBird maintains a list of sensitive species, currently around 325 taxa across nine categories of risk, whose locations are not publicly displayed.
The reason is that publishing a precise location for certain birds causes targeted disturbance: nests visited, roosts crowded, individuals harassed by birders and photographers, and in some cases trapping and persecution. Owls feature heavily, as do raptor nests and a number of range-restricted species.
So a site's list is not the complete truth about what is there, and an absence in the data is sometimes a deliberate silence rather than a real gap. That is the right call, and it is worth understanding rather than working around.

Weekend bias. Far more checklists are submitted on Saturdays and Sundays, which skews frequency for anything that varies with human presence.

Morning bias. Most birding happens early, so crepuscular and nocturnal species are systematically underrepresented.

Season bias. Spring migration attracts vastly more effort than August, so a thin bar in late summer may reflect nobody looking.

Skill bias. Difficult species are underreported by less experienced observers and over-reported by the overconfident, and both happen.

Reporting bias. Common birds are frequently omitted from lists focused on a target species, which depresses the frequency of birds that are everywhere.

Boundary sprawl. Large hotspots covering several habitats produce inflated lists that tell you nothing about where within them to stand.
None of this makes the data bad. It is the best dataset of its kind ever assembled. It makes it data about birders as well as about birds, which is a different thing from what most people think they are reading.
The question eBird does not answer at all
Here is the practical gap, and it is the one that ruins trips: eBird tells you what was seen. It does not tell you whether you may go there.
A hotspot can sit on private land birded by permission the submitter had and you do not. It can sit inside a refuge unit that closes for half the year, on a wildlife area open only on non-hunt days, behind a seasonal gate, or along a road impassable in winter. It can require a permit or a reservation. It can be viewable only from a right of way with no legal parking. None of that appears in the checklist, a pin on a map is not permission, and the number of birders who have driven three hours to a locked gate is not small.
There is a feature that addresses part of this from the other direction. eBird distinguishes hotspots, which are public and shared, from personal locations, which are private to you, and the personal location is the right choice when you are birding private land by permission, your own garden, or anywhere that publishing a shared pin would send strangers somewhere they cannot legally go. Creating a public hotspot on private land is a damaging and permanent mistake, visible to everyone, producing a stream of visitors the landowner never agreed to. If you bird somewhere by permission, use a personal location, and if you find something rare there, describe the access situation explicitly in the report.

Contributing well, and what a flagged record means
The planning use is the obvious one. The scientific use is the reason eBird exists, and understanding it changes how you should submit.
eBird is a research dataset that has produced more than a thousand peer-reviewed studies, and its modeled outputs now underpin a substantial amount of what is known about North American bird distribution and abundance through the year. Status and Trends models take the raw checklists and correct statistically for exactly the biases described above, producing weekly abundance surfaces for hundreds of species, which is where those animated migration maps that circulate every spring come from.
Those models depend on complete checklists. A list recording everything you identified, with effort data attached, is usable. A list of the three interesting birds is not, because the model cannot distinguish absence from non-reporting. So the single most useful thing you can do as a contributor is boring: submit complete checklists with accurate distance and duration, including the starlings. Incidental observations still help for rarities and distribution, but they cannot feed the abundance models, and negative data is data, since a complete checklist from a site where a common species was absent tells the model something real.
Your first flagged record will feel like an accusation and is not one. Regional filters define what is expected in each area by date, with limits on counts, and anything outside them is flagged automatically. Volunteer reviewers, usually very experienced local birders, then follow up and ask what you saw and why you think it was that. Being flagged is entirely normal, and reporting a common bird two weeks early, or forty of something rather than four, will do it. Documentation is the whole point: a photograph, a recording, or a written description of what you observed. An unconfirmed record still exists in your personal list and is simply excluded from public output and research use. The healthy way to see a filter question is as a conversation with an expert about a bird.
The gear
Using eBird well is a matter of knowing which screen to look at, so most of this list is a set of habits rather than objects.
The bar chart rather than the species list, which is the single most important habit. The species list tells you what has ever been seen at a hotspot, including one record from 1997. The bar chart tells you what is there in the week you are going and how frequently, and that is the question you have.
The effort data, meaning the number of checklists behind a bar. A species showing on twenty percent of checklists at a hotspot with two thousand lists is a real pattern; the same twenty percent at a hotspot with five lists is noise.
Recent checklist comments, which is where the practical information hides. Road closures, water levels, where the bird was, and whether the gate was locked all live in comments rather than in the structured data.
A separate access check, because eBird is a bird database and not a land ownership one. A hotspot pin says people submitted lists there, not that you may stand there.
Offline maps, since the good spots frequently have no coverage.
Your own notebook, because the bird you found in the corner nobody submits from will not be in anybody's data next year unless you put it there.
And skepticism about round numbers, which are almost always estimates entered as counts.
How to plan a trip with it

Start with the county bar chart rather than the hotspot list, to establish what should be around in your week.

Pick sites by habitat match rather than by raw species total.

Read recent checklists, not just totals. The comments carry the useful detail: which pond, which corner, what time, what the water level was doing.

Look at the observer. A list from somebody who submits carefully every week is worth more than a one-off.

Check the effort data. Forty-five species from a five-hour ten-mile walk is a very different claim from forty-five species from twenty minutes in a parking lot.

Then check access separately, before you drive.
Merlin, and where automated identification fits
Merlin Sound ID identifies birds from audio in real time, and it is remarkable technology that has brought a large number of people into birding who would otherwise have bounced off the difficulty of song learning. It is also not a citation.
The healthy way to use it is to treat a suggestion as a hypothesis and then confirm it yourself, by listening, by looking, or by checking whether the species is plausible where and when you are. Do not submit Merlin suggestions as records without independent confirmation; regional reviewers are dealing with a rising volume of automated misidentifications, and unverified suggestions entering the dataset are a real data-quality problem. It also struggles in precisely the situations where you most want help, meaning distant birds, noisy environments, overlapping songs and unusual species with limited training data, and its confident errors tend to fall on exactly the rarities that matter.
Where it excels is as a teacher. Using it to point you at a sound, and then learning that sound properly, is the best thing it does.
The same caution applies to the photo identification tool and to the automated suggestions that appear as you enter a checklist. Both are trained on what is common, which means they are confident about common birds and least reliable on exactly the unusual ones you would most want confirmed. A suggestion that agrees with what you already thought is worth very little as evidence, and a suggestion that disagrees is worth investigating rather than accepting.
The short version
eBird is indispensable, and it is a record of where birders went, filtered through what birders reported, with some things deliberately removed.
Read the bar charts rather than the totals, respect the sensitive-species silences, and never confuse a hotspot pin with a right to stand there.
