Dallas is a sprawling concrete metroplex of 1.3 million people, and it has over 1,000 acres of fishable water inside city limits. White Rock Lake, 1,015 acres of largemouth bass, white crappie, and channel catfish, sits five miles northeast of downtown, ringed by a 9-mile trail and surrounded by million-dollar homes. The Trinity River cuts through the city's floodway, holding alligator gar that grow to prehistoric proportions and flathead catfish that lurk in the deepest bends. Bachman Lake, near Love Field airport, holds bass and catfish while Southwest Airlines jets pass overhead. And neighborhood ponds scattered across the city get stocked by Texas Parks and Wildlife with channel catfish and rainbow trout.

This is not "drive to Lake Fork" fishing. This is casting inside the 635 Loop, walking from your car to the water's edge, and catching fish while the Dallas skyline watches.

White Rock Lake: Dallas's Urban Jewel

White Rock Lake is the crown jewel of Dallas urban fishing. This 1,015-acre reservoir sits in a 2,000-acre park just northeast of downtown, created in 1911 as the city's water supply and now one of the best urban fisheries in Texas. The lake holds excellent populations of largemouth bass (including Florida-strain genetics), white crappie, channel catfish, blue catfish, white bass, and sunfish. The shoreline is almost entirely public, with a 9.33-mile hike-and-bike trail circling the lake and multiple access points.

Where on White Rock Lake

Sunset Bay (West Shore): The most popular fishing area. A shallow bay with reeds, lily pads, and fallen timber that hold bass year-round. Walk-on from Sunset Bay parking area. Wading is possible in the shallows.

Dickson Branch Creek mouth (North end): Where Dickson Branch flows into the lake, creating a delta of mud flats and vegetation. Bass stage here in spring. Catfish hold in the deeper channel. Walk-on from the trail.

Winfrey Point (East Shore): A peninsula with access to deeper water. Good crappie fishing around the dock structures. Walk-on from Winfrey Point parking.

Bath House Cultural Center area (East Shore): Deep water near the historic building. Bass, crappie, and catfish. Walk-on from the parking area.

Dam area (South end): The deepest water in the lake. Catfish hold near the dam face. White bass school here in late winter.

White Rock Lake Techniques

Largemouth bass: A 6'6" to 7' medium spinning rod, 2500-size reel, 10-pound braid, 8-pound fluorocarbon leader. Texas-rigged soft plastics (Senko worms, creature baits) pitched to the reed beds and timber at Sunset Bay. Topwater frogs and buzzbaits in the shallow reed beds early and late. Ned rigs along the rocky points. The bass average 1 to 3 pounds with fish to 6 pounds available.

White crappie: Jigs (1/16 to 1/32 ounce, chartreuse or white) or small minnows fished vertically around dock pilings, brush piles, and bridge structures. The crappie are 8 to 12 inches and school in predictable locations. Best in spring (March-April) when they move shallow to spawn.

Channel catfish: Nightcrawlers, chicken liver, or punch bait on a bottom rig. Fish the deeper areas near the dam and creek channels. The lake has been recently stocked with over 10,000 nine-inch channel catfish.

White bass (winter/spring): Small jigs and inline spinners cast into schools of feeding white bass near the dam and creek mouths. White bass run up the creek arms in late winter to spawn, fast action when you find the school.

The Trinity River: Urban Gar and Catfish

The Trinity River runs through the heart of Dallas in a massive floodway, a wide, leveed channel that most Dallasites barely notice. But the river holds alligator gar, longnose gar, flathead catfish, channel catfish, blue catfish, largemouth bass, carp, and freshwater drum. Alligator gar in the Trinity can exceed 100 pounds, and flathead catfish over 30 pounds are caught regularly from the bank.

Where on the Trinity River

Trinity River Audubon Center: Walk-on access to the river from the Audubon center's trails south of downtown. Catfish and gar in the deeper bends.

Dallas Floodway (Downtown): The wide channel through downtown is fishable from the levee banks. Walk-on from the Trinity River Greenbelt trails. Largemouth bass, catfish, and gar. The Continental Avenue Bridge area provides access.

South Dallas / Loop 12 area: Less crowded sections of the Trinity with good catfish and gar populations. Walk-on from bridge crossings and levee access points.

Trinity River Techniques

Alligator gar: Heavy tackle, 7-foot heavy rod, 50-pound braid, 80-pound leader. Cut mullet or carp on a large circle hook (8/0 to 10/0) with a heavy sinker, fished on the bottom near deep bends where gar are surfacing. Or rope lures. Patience is everything, gar mouth bait for minutes before turning to swallow.

Flathead catfish: Live bluegill or sunfish (caught on-site) on a 5/0 to 7/0 circle hook with a 2-ounce sinker. Fish the deep bends and bridge pilings at night. The biggest flatheads feed after dark.

Channel catfish: Cut shad, chicken liver, or nightcrawlers on a bottom rig. Every accessible section of the Trinity holds channel cats.

Other Urban Lakes and Ponds

Bachman Lake

A 205-acre lake in northwest Dallas near Love Field airport. Largemouth bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, white crappie, and sunfish. Walk-on from the park's trail system. Less crowded than White Rock Lake but similar species mix. Planes landing at Love Field pass directly overhead, unique scenery for urban fishing.

Neighborhood Fishin' Ponds

Texas Parks and Wildlife's Neighborhood Fishin' program stocks ponds across the DFW metro with channel catfish monthly May through October and rainbow trout in winter (December-March).

In Dallas proper: Look for stocked ponds at city parks, check the TPWD Neighborhood Fishin' website for current locations and stocking schedules. Nearby stocked waters in Irving, Grand Prairie, and Garland are within a short drive.

How to Fish Stocked Ponds

Channel catfish: Nightcrawlers, chicken liver, or stink bait on a bottom rig. Cast to the middle and wait. Stocked catfish are 1 to 4 pounds.

Rainbow trout (December-March): PowerBait or small spinners. Fish within 48 hours of stocking.

When to Fish

March-May (Spring): The best season. Bass spawn at White Rock Lake. Crappie move shallow. Catfish become aggressive. Gar start surfacing in the Trinity. Comfortable weather.

June-September (Summer): Fish early morning or late evening, Dallas summers hit 100°F+. Catfish peak in the Trinity (night fishing). Bass go deep at White Rock. Catfish stocking at neighborhood ponds.

October-November (Fall): Excellent all-around. Bass feed aggressively before winter. White bass school near the White Rock dam. Comfortable temperatures for all-day fishing.

December-February (Winter): Trout stocking at neighborhood ponds. White bass run at White Rock Lake. Slower bass and catfish fishing but still productive on warm days.

Practical Details

Getting there: Dallas is a car city. White Rock Lake has multiple free parking areas around the 9-mile loop. DART bus routes reach some lake access points but a car is more practical. Trinity River access points have limited parking near bridge crossings.

Gear that travels: A two-piece 7-foot medium spinning rod covers White Rock bass, crappie, catfish, and neighborhood pond fishing. For Trinity River gar and flatheads, bring heavy gear. An ultralight rod for crappie makes White Rock Lake more fun.
