Most nymph fishing fails for one reason, and it is not fly choice. The fly was not deep enough, soon enough.
A nymph that lands with the leader stretched out behind it sinks slowly, because the line and leader are lying on the surface acting as a parachute. In slow water that is fine, you have time. In pocket water, where the useful drift is four feet long and lasts two seconds, the fly reaches fishing depth just as the drift ends. You spend the day covering water at the wrong level.
The tuck cast solves that, and it does it with geometry rather than lead.
What it actually does
Make a forward cast, but stop the rod high and abruptly, with more power than the distance needs.
The leader turns over hard, runs out of line to straighten, and rebounds. The fly kicks down and back under the leader, entering the water first and travelling downward, while the leader and line fall in a loose pile above and behind it.
That head start is the whole cast. The fly enters already going down, with slack above it so nothing is holding it up, and it gets several feet deeper in the first second than it would from a straight delivery.

It looks like one, because it leaves slack behind it. It is not doing the same job.
A slack line cast puts slack in the line to protect a drift from drag, and you leave that slack alone and let the current feed it out.
A tuck cast puts slack above the fly to let it sink, and then you want that slack gone immediately. The instant the fly is down, you are trying to get straight to it so you can feel what it is doing.
Same-looking cast, opposite intention afterward, and mixing them up is why some people tuck beautifully and still never detect a take.
Tuck or lead
Both get a nymph deep, and the honest comparison is worth making because the usual pitch treats the tuck as free depth.
More weight sinks faster, works in any current, and requires no technique. It also drifts less naturally, hangs up on the bottom far more, casts badly, and changes what the fly looks like to a fish.
A tuck buys depth without adding mass, so the fly keeps a lighter and more natural drift. What it costs is entry disturbance, since the fly hits the water harder than a gentle presentation does, and accuracy, because an overpowered cast is inherently less precise.
The practical answer most good nymph fishers arrive at is to carry flies in several weights, use the lightest that will reach bottom in a given piece of water, and make up the difference with the tuck rather than by going heavier. That keeps the drift quality up and the hang-ups down.
It is also worth saying plainly that if the water is deep and slow, a tuck will not save you. There, depth comes from weight and from time, and no amount of casting technique substitutes.
The stop is everything
The tuck lives or dies on the stop, and the two failure modes are opposite.
Too soft and nothing happens. The leader straightens gently, the fly lands where a normal cast would put it, and there is no tuck at all. People add power to the whole stroke to fix this, which produces a fast flat cast rather than a tucked one. The energy has to arrive at the stop, not before it.
Too hard and the fly slams in, bounces, or kicks so far back under that it lands closer to you than the leader does. On thin clear water that is a fish-scaring entry, and in any water it means you have lost control of where the fly is.
Rod height at the stop matters as much as force. Stop high, with the rod tip well up, and the pile falls above the fly where you want it. Stop low and the line comes down on top of the fly, killing the sink and tangling the leader.

The cast is half the technique. The other half starts the moment the fly lands.
Lift the rod tip and gather the slack you just created, following the flies downstream with the tip. You are trying to arrive at a straight line to the fly without pulling it up off the bottom, which is a genuine balancing act and the thing that takes a season to learn.
Then lead the flies. Rather than letting the line follow passively, move the rod tip downstream slightly ahead of where you believe the flies are, keeping just enough tension to feel them without dragging them. Contact without lifting.
That contact is what makes takes detectable. A nymph take at depth is often nothing more than a hesitation, a tick, or the leader stopping a fraction earlier than the current should have carried it. You cannot feel any of that through a bow of slack line.
Variations worth knowing
The basic tuck has a few relatives and they solve slightly different problems.
A soft tuck is the same cast with the power dialed back, producing a gentle turnover that still puts the fly under the leader but enters quietly. It is what you want in thin clear water where a hard entry would empty the pool. Less depth, less disturbance.
A hauling tuck adds a short sharp haul with the line hand at the moment of the stop, which increases turnover speed without requiring a harder rod stroke. It is the way to get a strong tuck at distance, or with a heavier rig, without the whole cast becoming violent. The haul does the same thing here as it does everywhere else: it adds line speed, and here you are spending that speed on the rebound rather than on distance. Anyone who has worked through the double haul already owns the motion.
An angled tuck aims the cast slightly upstream rather than straight across, which buys sink time before the fly reaches the target. Combined with a normal tuck it is how you fish water deeper than a single drift length would otherwise allow.
And there is the version nobody names, which is simply a tuck made with the rod tipped over sideways so the pile lands off to one side rather than directly upstream of the fly. Useful when a straight upstream pile would drift down onto the fly and kill the sink.
The vertical problem, restated
It is worth stepping back from technique for a moment, because the tuck cast is a means and not an end.
Nymph fishing is a depth problem with a time limit. You have a window, defined by how long the current takes to carry your fly through the holding water, and you need the fly at the fish's level for as much of that window as possible. Everything else, weight, leader diameter, rod length, tuck cast, is a lever on the same equation.
Which means the diagnostic question after every drift is the same: was the fly at the right level, and for how long. Not what pattern was on. Anglers who fish nymphs badly usually change flies. Anglers who fish nymphs well usually change depth, and they change it by moving one lever at a time so they can tell what worked.
If you are catching nothing and hanging bottom constantly, you are too deep or too heavy. If you are catching nothing and never touching bottom in water you believe holds fish, you are not deep enough and the tuck is the first thing to reach for before adding lead.
Where it earns its keep
Pocket water, above everything. Fast broken runs where the fish sit in small pockets behind rocks and each pocket gives you two or three feet of drift. This is the water the tuck cast was made for and the water where nothing else works.
Plunge pools and the tongues at the heads of runs, where the current is fast on top and the fish are underneath it, and where a fly needs to punch through the surface layer before it gets swept past.
Short seams and edges, where you get one chance in a small target and there is no room to let a fly sink gradually on a long drift.
Steep freestone rivers generally. Cutthroat trout water in the Rockies and small rainbow trout and brown trout streams are full of exactly this geometry, and anglers who cannot tuck spend the day fishing over the top of fish.
Where it matters less: slow deep pools, still water, and any presentation where the fly is meant to be moving rather than dead drifting near the bottom. In a long slow pool you have all the drift you need, so gentle entry and a light fly will outfish an aggressive tuck almost every time.
The faults, briefly
No tuck at all means the energy went into the stroke rather than the stop. Cast at a target closer than you are aiming and stop the rod hard and high.
The fly landing behind the leader, closer to you than the line, means too much power. Ease off; the rebound only needs to be enough to turn the fly under.
Line landing on top of the fly means the rod stopped too low. Raise the stopping point.
Tangles between the flies on a two-fly rig usually mean the turnover is inconsistent rather than too strong. A clean tuck actually tangles less than a sloppy overhead cast, because the fly and the leader separate cleanly.
And a cast that tucks beautifully with no takes detected is a contact problem rather than a casting one. The cast worked; you never got tight to it.
Safety, which is not boilerplate here
This cast deliberately accelerates a weighted fly on a short leader and drives it downward at the end of the stroke, and the geometry brings it back toward you rather than away.
Wear eye protection, every time, with no exceptions. Beadhead nymphs are hard, heavy and fast, and a tuck cast is the delivery most likely to put one somewhere you did not intend. A hat with a brim helps too.
Barbless or pinched-down hooks are worth considering on a rig you tuck regularly, and not only for the fish.
The gear
A longer rod, ten feet or more if you fish this way often. The extra length is what lets you hold line off the water and stay in contact after the tuck, which is the half that turns a good cast into caught fish.
A long thin leader, because thin material cuts current and sinks, and a fat butt section lying on the surface is exactly the parachute you were trying to avoid.
Nymphs in several weights of the same pattern. Depth control by fly selection, with the tuck making up the difference, beats reaching for split shot every time the water changes.
A visible sighter section in the leader, if you are fishing tight line, since your take detection is largely visual at depth.
Eye protection. Listed under gear as well as safety because it is the one item here nobody should fish without.
Polarized glasses that are also eye protection, which conveniently solves both, and which let you see the bottom you are trying to get near.
And a piece of pocket water with nobody on it, because this cast cannot be learned on a lawn. The feedback is entirely about how fast the fly got down, and grass does not tell you that.
Before you go

The short version
A tuck cast stops the rod high and hard so the leader rebounds and the fly kicks down and under, entering the water first and going deeper faster. It buys depth without adding weight, which keeps the drift natural and the hang-ups down.
It is not a slack line cast. The slack exists to let the fly sink and you want it gone immediately.
And the cast is only half of it. Gathering that slack and leading the flies without lifting them is where nymph fishing is actually won.
If there is one habit worth taking from this article, it is diagnosing by depth rather than by pattern. Hanging bottom constantly means too deep or too heavy. Never touching bottom in water that should hold fish means not deep enough, and the tuck is the first lever to pull before you start adding lead. Change one thing per run and you will know which lever did it, which is more than most anglers can say after a full season.
