The Roll Cast: When There Is a Tree Behind You

Most of the best trout water in America has a tree behind it. The roll cast loads the rod against the water instead of against a back cast, and it is the foundation every spey cast is built on.

Most of the best trout water in America has a tree behind it.

The overhead cast assumes an empty sky at your back, and a great deal of fishing does not offer one. Brushy banks, undercut walls, alders to the shoulder, a drift boat with two other people in it, a cliff. The roll cast is what you do instead, and once you can make a good one, water that looked unfishable opens up.

It is also the foundation of every two-handed spey cast, so the twenty minutes spent learning it properly pays twice.

The trick, stated once

An ordinary cast loads the rod against a straightened line in the air behind you. A roll cast loads it against the water.

That is the whole idea. Part of your line stays on the surface, the water grips it, and when you accelerate forward the rod bends against that grip instead of against a back cast. No line ever goes behind you, so it does not matter what is back there.

The piece of line touching the water is called the anchor, and it is the single most important thing in this cast. If the anchor is in the right place, the cast works. If it comes off the water, there is nothing to load against and the line falls in a heap.

The D-loop

Slide the rod back slowly and the line follows, lifting off the water near the rod tip while the far end stays put. What hangs between the rod tip and the anchor is a curve of line called the D-loop, because seen from the side the line and the rod together look like the letter.

The D-loop is your back cast. Everything that a back cast does in an overhead cast, the D-loop does here: it puts line behind the rod so there is something to accelerate.

Bigger D-loop, more line in the air, more energy available, longer cast. Small D-loop, short cast. If your roll casts are weak, the usual reason is that the D-loop was too small, which usually means the rod did not travel far enough back.

Start slow, and why

The single most repeated instruction for this cast is to move the rod back slowly, and the reason is worth understanding rather than obeying blindly.

Water holds line. Peel it off gently and it releases smoothly, leaving the far end anchored. Rip it off fast and the whole line comes free at once, the anchor breaks, and you now have a badly formed back cast in the trees you were trying to avoid.

So the sequence has two completely different speeds in it. Slow and deliberate going back, to build the D-loop without disturbing the anchor. Then fast and crisp going forward, exactly like any other cast: accelerate smoothly, stop abruptly, and let the stop form the loop. The same stroke mechanics apply on the forward stroke as anywhere else.

People who struggle with roll casts are almost always making the whole thing at one speed.

Where the anchor goes

Not straight out in front of you. Slightly off to your casting side.

If the anchor sits directly in line with the cast, the forward loop travels straight into the line still lying on the water, collides with it, and you get a tangle and a dead cast. Offsetting it by a foot or two means the loop passes cleanly alongside.

Distance matters too. An anchor too close to you gives a cramped D-loop and a cast that piles. Too far away and there is too much line stuck to the water for the rod to move; you will feel it as a heavy, sticky cast that goes nowhere. Roughly a rod length out in front and slightly to the side is the place to start.

A useful check: the leader and the last few feet of line should be lying on the water, and the rest should be in the air in the D-loop. If half your fly line is still on the surface when you go forward, you are trying to move too much water.

Roll Casting Tips: Start Slow

The version you will use most

Here is the roll cast that experienced anglers make dozens of times a day without thinking of it as a cast at all.

You are fishing a weighted nymph rig, or a sinking line, and the line is down in the water column. You cannot lift that into a back cast. Pulling a sunk line straight up loads the rod against several pounds of drag, throws the flies around unpredictably and, with weight on the leader, is a genuine way to hook yourself.

So you roll cast first. One easy roll brings everything to the surface and straightens it out in front of you. Now you can pick up cleanly and make whatever cast you actually wanted.

That is the roll cast pickup, and it is probably the most useful single motion in practical fly fishing. It is also the reason a roll cast is worth learning even by people who never fish tight water.

Variants worth knowing

The switch cast is a roll cast that never lands. You form the D-loop, come forward, and instead of letting the line settle you use the straightening line to make a normal back cast. It is how you get from a downstream drift back into an overhead cast without a huge lift, and it is the direct ancestor of the spey casts.

The dynamic roll cast is the same idea with a more energetic setup, sweeping the rod back rather than sliding it, which builds a larger D-loop and casts further. It requires a firmer anchor and better timing.

And the roll cast can be aimed high or low. Aimed at the water it lands the line straight, which is what you want to reposition. Aimed a few feet above the surface it turns over in the air and drops with some slack, which is what you want for a drag-free drift.

The faults, and how each one feels

Four failures cover nearly everything, and they feel distinct enough to diagnose without a video.

A cast that lands in a pile at your feet almost always means the anchor broke. You moved the rod back too fast, the line came off the water, and there was nothing for the rod to load against when you came forward. It feels weightless, like casting into air, because that is exactly what happened.

A cast that feels heavy and sticky and barely moves means the opposite: too much line still welded to the surface. Strip in a few feet and try again. The rod cannot pick up thirty feet of wet line and throw it at the same time.

A cast that goes out and tangles with itself means the anchor was directly in the path of the forward loop. Move it a foot or two to your casting side and the problem disappears entirely.

And a cast that turns over weakly, running out of energy halfway, is a D-loop that never got big enough. The rod did not travel far enough back, or you came forward before the loop had formed. Slow down and let it build.

Current changes everything

Everything above assumes still water. A river does not stay still, and the difference is worth planning for.

Current drags your anchor while you are forming the D-loop. Downstream of you it pulls the anchor away and stretches it out; upstream it slides it toward you and slackens everything. So the same motion produces a different cast depending on which way the water is running and where you are standing.

Two consequences follow.

Downstream current is mostly your friend. It keeps tension in the line, holds the anchor firm and makes the D-loop easy to form. This is the situation the cast was really designed for, and it is why the roll cast is so natural at the end of a swung drift.

Upstream or across-and-toward-you current is the difficult case. The line piles, the anchor loses its grip, and the D-loop collapses before you can use it. The fix is to work faster, keeping the setup and the forward stroke close together rather than pausing, and to accept a shorter cast than you would make on a pond.

There is also a practical trick worth knowing. If the current has thrown your line into a mess in front of you, do not try to roll cast out of it directly. Make one short throwaway roll purely to straighten everything, then make the real cast from the tidy line the first one left you. Two casts is faster than one bad one and a tangle.

Its real limitation

A roll cast will not straighten a very long line and it will not fight much wind.

Because the rod is loading against water grip rather than a fully tensioned line, there is a ceiling on how much energy the system can carry. Thirty or forty feet is comfortable. Sixty is possible with good technique and a line designed for it. Ninety is not happening.

It is also directionally limited: a plain roll cast goes more or less where the line already is. Changing direction significantly requires repositioning the anchor first, and the family of casts that do that elegantly are the spey casts, which is exactly why they were invented.

If you find yourself needing distance and a direction change with no room behind you, that is the signal that a two-handed rod or a single-hand spey cast is the right tool rather than a bigger roll cast.

Where it earns its keep

Small brushy streams are the obvious case. Brook trout water in the East and cutthroat trout water in the Rockies are frequently tunnels of alder and willow where an overhead cast is impossible and a roll cast is routine.

Tailwaters and big rivers are the less obvious one. Fishing a deep nymph rig for rainbow trout and brown trout means lifting weight off the bottom on every cast, and the roll cast pickup is what makes that safe and repeatable.

Boats too. In a drift boat the rower is behind you and so is another angler, and a roll cast keeps a size 4 streamer out of everybody's ear.

The gear

A rod with a bit of flex in the middle. Very fast rods roll cast poorly for beginners because they need a crisp load and the roll cast builds load more gradually. A medium action is genuinely easier here.

A floating line, or at least a floating running line. A fully sinking line cannot form an anchor at the surface, which is why the roll cast pickup exists as a separate move.

A weight-forward line with a reasonably long front taper. Short aggressive heads roll cast badly because there is not enough mass in the right place to form a D-loop.

A leader that turns over without help. Roll casts deliver less energy than overhead casts, so an overlong or badly tapered leader that just about works overhead will collapse here.

Polarized glasses, because the anchor is on the water and being able to see exactly where it landed is most of the feedback available.

A short line to practice with. Twenty-five feet outside the rod tip is plenty to learn on, and more line makes every fault harder to see.

And a pond or slow pool rather than fast current, at least at first. Moving water drags the anchor while you are trying to form the D-loop, which adds a variable you do not need yet.

The short version

The roll cast loads the rod against water gripping the anchor instead of against a back cast, which is why nothing goes behind you. Slide the rod back slowly to build the D-loop without breaking the anchor, place that anchor about a rod length out and slightly to your casting side, then accelerate forward and stop exactly as you would on any other cast.

Learn the roll cast pickup even if you never fish tight water, because it is how a sunk line becomes castable.

And know its ceiling. Around forty feet, very little direction change, and not much use in wind. Past that you are looking at spey casts, and every one of them starts from what you just learned.

There is a wider point buried in this cast that is worth taking away. Fly casting is usually taught as though the overhead cast is the real thing and everything else is a workaround for awkward situations. That is backwards for a lot of American fishing. On small streams, on brushy tailwaters, in a boat, and any time there is weight on the leader, the roll cast is not the compromise. It is the primary tool, and the overhead cast is the one you use when conditions happen to allow it.

Anglers who accept that early stop apologizing for the water they have and start fishing it.
