Reach and Curve Casts: Beating Drag Before It Starts

A trout does not care how far you can cast. It cares whether the fly moves like a real insect. Presentation casts decide where the line lands relative to the fly while everything is still in the air.

A trout does not care how far you can cast. It cares whether the fly is moving the way a real insect would, and in moving water that is a much harder problem than distance.

The enemy is drag. Your fly lands in one thread of current and your line lands across several others, all moving at different speeds. Within a second or two the faster water grabs the line, the line pulls the leader, and the fly starts skating across the surface at a speed no natural insect has ever managed. Fish notice this immediately and completely.

Presentation casts are the answer, and they work by deciding where the line lands relative to the fly while everything is still in the air.

Why mending afterward is second best

Most anglers learn to mend: after the line lands, you flip a loop of it upstream to buy some slack.

Mending works and everybody should know how. But it happens after the line is already on the water, which means two things have already gone wrong. The current has had a moment to start pulling, and the act of flipping the line usually twitches the fly.

A reach cast does the same job before the line ever touches down. No drag has started, nothing moves the fly, and the drift begins clean. It is the difference between preventing a problem and correcting one.

The reach cast

The motion is smaller than people expect.

Make an ordinary forward cast and stop the rod as usual. Then, while the line is still unrolling in the air and before it lands, lean the rod over to one side, moving the whole arm and rod tip horizontally.

The line follows the rod tip. It lands displaced to that side, with the fly still where you aimed it. You have effectively made a mend in mid-air, and it costs nothing.

Two details decide whether it works.

The reach comes after the stop. If you start leaning during the casting stroke, you have simply made a crooked cast that goes somewhere other than where you aimed. Stop the rod, form the loop, then move.

You must feed line while you reach. Moving the rod sideways takes line, and if you do not give it any, that line comes from the far end and pulls your fly back toward you. Let a foot or two slip through your fingers as the rod goes over. Anglers who skip this find their fly landing short and to the side and conclude the cast does not work.

The reach also shortens your cast, because rod travel that would have gone toward the target went sideways instead. Aim a little further than you mean to land.

Which way to reach

Upstream, almost always.

The point is to put line on the water upstream of the fly, so the current has to travel the length of that line before it can begin pulling. You have bought yourself a longer drag-free drift, and on a wide seam that can be the difference between two seconds of good presentation and eight.

The downstream reach exists too and is worth knowing. Casting across and down, reaching downstream puts the fly ahead of the line so the fly reaches the fish first, which is the presentation you want when a fish is looking upstream at you and you do not want it to see leader before it sees the fly. It is also how you set up a controlled feed of line into a downstream drift.

The general rule that covers both: reach toward the faster water. That is the water that will grab your line first, so that is where you want the slack.

How To Practice Your Reach Cast

Curve casts

Where the reach cast moves the line sideways, a curve cast makes the line and leader land in a hook.

Why you would want that comes down to three situations. A fish sitting behind a rock that you cannot reach in a straight line. A fish that must not see the leader before it sees the fly. And a current seam where the fly needs to land on the far side of it while the line stays on yours.

The mechanism is a sidearm cast plus deliberate mismatched power.

Overpower a sidearm cast and the leader carries too much energy at the end of its turnover. It kicks around past straight and lands in a hook, curving away in the direction the loop was rotating.

Underpower a sidearm cast and the opposite happens. The leader runs out of energy before it straightens, collapses, and falls in a curve the other way.

Which physical direction each of those produces depends on your handedness, which side of your body you cast on, and how far over you tilt the rod. Rather than memorize somebody else's left and right, go to a lawn, make deliberately overpowered and underpowered sidearm casts with a piece of yarn on the leader, and watch which way each one hooks for you. Ten minutes and you will own it permanently, which is more than can be said for reading a description of it.

The stop, aimed high

One more presentation trick that belongs here because it costs nothing.

Aim the forward cast a few feet above the water rather than at it. The loop turns over in the air, runs out of energy, and the line and leader fall to the surface with gentle waves in them.

Aim at the water and everything lands straight and tight, which is what you want when you need to be in contact with the fly immediately, as when nymphing or stripping a streamer.

Aim high and you land with built-in slack, which is what you want for a dead drift. Same cast, different aiming point, completely different presentation. It is the cheapest presentation control there is and a great many anglers have never deliberately tried it.

Reading a seam, which is the actual skill

All of this assumes you can look at moving water and say where the fast thread is. That is worth spending a paragraph on, because it is the input everything else depends on.

Current is fastest in the middle and at the surface, and slowest along the bottom and against anything solid. So a seam is any line where two speeds meet: the edge of the main flow against a slower eddy, the tongue at the head of a pool where fast water enters slow, the crease behind a boulder, the strip alongside an undercut bank.

Fish sit in the slow side and feed on what the fast side delivers. That is why seams matter, and it is also why almost every drag problem is a seam problem: the fish is in the slow water and you are standing on the other side of the fast water.

The tells are visible once you look for them. A change in surface texture, from smooth to riffled or riffled to smooth. A line of bubbles or foam, which marks the main current thread precisely and for free. A wedge of calm behind an obstruction. Watch a leaf or a clump of foam float through and it will trace the fast thread for you better than any description.

Once you can see it, the decision is mechanical. If the fast water is between you and the fish, you need slack in the line and a reach toward it. If you are standing in the fast water and casting into slow water, you have the easier problem and a straight cast may be fine.

The step nobody talks about: where you stand

The best presentation cast is often the one you do not have to make.

Before reaching for technique, consider moving. Wading ten feet upstream or crossing to the inside of a bend can turn a cast that requires an aerial mend, a curve and a prayer into a simple straight delivery with the current running along your line rather than across it.

The general principle is that casting from directly downstream, or from the same current speed as the fish, removes most drag problems at source. Anglers who are good at this look like they have magical presentation skills, and what they actually have is a habit of walking thirty seconds further before they cast.

It is worth being honest about the trade. Repositioning risks spooking fish, especially in low clear water, and sometimes the bank or the depth simply does not allow it. But the reflex to solve everything with the rod, from wherever you happened to be standing, costs people more fish than any casting fault.

Putting them together

Real fishing usually asks for a combination.

Cast across and slightly upstream, reach upstream during the unroll, and aim high so the line lands with waves in it. That single delivery gives you an aerial mend, built-in slack and a fly landing before the leader, which is close to the best presentation available with a dry fly on a cross-current seam.

The habit worth building is to decide the presentation before you decide the cast. Look at the water, work out where the fast thread is and which way it will pull, and then choose the delivery that puts your line where that pull will do least damage. Most anglers do the reverse: they cast, watch drag ruin the drift, and then mend in reaction.

Where these matter most

Anywhere the current between you and the fish is not uniform, which is most of a trout river.

Classic dry fly water for rainbow trout and brown trout is exactly this problem: fish holding on a seam with faster water between you and them. Spring creeks and tailwaters are the extreme version, with slow clear water, educated fish and a fly that is refused the instant it moves unnaturally.

Cutthroat trout in freestone rivers are more forgiving, which makes them a good place to practice these casts and actually get feedback, since a fish will often still eat a slightly dragged fly and tell you the drift was close.

The casts matter less when you are fishing directly upstream, since the current is pulling along the line rather than across it, and less again with subsurface presentations that are meant to move. A swung wet fly or a stripped streamer is supposed to travel across the current, so drag is the mechanism rather than the enemy, and a straight tight line is exactly what you want.

The gear

A rod you can cast accurately at thirty feet, because every one of these casts is an accuracy cast rather than a distance cast. Most presentation problems happen inside forty feet.

A longer rod, nine feet or more, which gives you meaningfully more reach for the same body movement. This is the one place rod length is directly and obviously useful.

A leader with a supple tippet section. Curve casts and aerial slack both depend on the leader being able to fall in shapes rather than snapping straight, and a stiff heavy tippet fights that.

Floating line with a visible color, since the whole point is watching what your line is doing on the water.

Polarized glasses, for reading the current seams you are trying to defeat. If you cannot see where the fast thread is, you cannot choose which way to reach.

Yarn on the leader and a lawn, for working out which way your curve casts actually go.

And, more useful than any of it, the discipline of watching your drift all the way out rather than recasting the moment the fly passes the target. Drag usually starts a beat after people stop paying attention, and seeing exactly when it begins is what teaches you how much slack you actually needed.

Reading the water first

None of this helps if you are on the river on the wrong day. Flow determines where seams form and how hard the current pulls, and it changes week to week; reading a river gauge covers finding out before you drive. And if there is no room behind you to make an overhead cast at all, the roll cast is the delivery to reach for, with the same aiming-point trick applied to it.

The short version

Drag is the problem, not distance. Mending fixes drag after it starts; a reach cast prevents it, by moving the rod sideways after the stop while the line is still unrolling, feeding line as you go. Reach toward the faster water. Curve casts come from over- or under-powering a sidearm delivery, and you should find out on grass which way yours hook rather than trusting somebody else's left and right. And aiming a few feet above the water instead of at it buys you slack for free.

Decide the presentation, then pick the cast. That order is the whole skill.

And before any of it, consider walking. A great many drag problems are solved by standing somewhere else, and the anglers who appear to have magical presentation are usually the ones who spent thirty seconds finding a better angle instead of trying to fix a bad one with the rod.
